8And that is that. Unfortunately, the game is not really much of a telling of the history of gaming (unless your history is just Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Diablo 3). Even if treated as a parody, it is not that good.
The game has alot of potential ideas but does nothing with them. The progress through the various graphic styles goes much too quickly and eventually the game is nothing but searching for secrets that do not mean anything (stars and cards). This is further frustrated by the obnoxiously high encounter rate and an annoying to use airship towards the end of the game.
I would have liked more focus on finding chests that expand on the gameplay rather than just excuses to make jokes and memes on various aspects of previous (and better) games of the past. The turn based combat could have started simple (though Evoland's version is even simpler than the first Dragon Warrior on the NES) then expanded on it by adding additional stats and options.
The appeal of turn based combat is not necessarily the combat itself but the mechanics around building up a character and/or party. Final Fantasy 7 had the Materia system. Diablo 2 had talent trees (even Diablo 3 had something to customize). Labyrinth of Touhou had the ability to level individual stats and Genius of Sappheiros had the Power system.
Not sure about the Zelda mechanics. It was functional but also simple even compared to old Zelda titles. I also do not classify Zelda as a series of RPGs though I am not sure if Evoland is about just RPGs. But there were plenty of more action based RPGs out there besides Diablo including some that do use puzzles and switches much like Zelda (Brain Lord, Crystalis, Brandish, and the Ys games come off the top of my head).
There was a neat idea in this game but everything seemed rushed. I heard this game did not take long to make but I do not allow that as an excuse (especially when it is being sold for nine to ten bucks on steam). Oh well...
