5🐧 Welcome to our blindish let's play Final Fantasy 2 Pixel Remaster Part 2 for the PS5: Dreadnought. I have little idea of what I'm embarking into. While I knew much of FF1 and watched a lot of randomizers of it, FF2 is remembered due to dying a lot, not using shields so my evasion was horrible, having to hit myself to increase my hp... and other horrible memories. I don't remember the story, or much of anything beyond the above, so I'm hoping to revisit this game and figure out if it's truly the black sheep of the franchise or a really good game. 🐧 About #FinalFantasy #PixelRemaster (from metacritic): The second game in the series introduces a new world, new characters and something that would become a trademark of the series: innovation.
The story focuses on the conflict between the hostile Empire of Palamecia and the rebel resistance. A small group of heroes is all that stands between the world and ruin.
FINAL FANTASY II demonstrates the developers' willingness to push their boundaries and try new things. For example, rather than sticking to the predictable, the game features a proficiency system in which characters skill with weapons and abilities increase the more they used them.
Fun fact: this is the FINAL FANTASY game that introduced the world to chocobos! Now that's a legacy.
77% on Metacritic with a 4.5 user rating (from the PC, which probably are due to the fonts the pixel remasters released with). Some reviews:
- CG Magazine 85%: The first three Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters deftly walk the line between old and new, but might not convert anyone without the stomach for old JRPGs.
- Gaming Trend 80%: While the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters aren’t perfect, they’re certainly the best and most convenient ways to play these classic games. The soundtracks are lovingly orchestrated and the pixel art is gorgeous, though the latter does lose some detail in the translation. Each game feels great to play, but I do wish extra content from previous releases or remakes had been included.
- RPG Fan 72%: As it stands, if you’re a FF series completionist like myself, this is easily the version of FFII I’d recommend given what it offers and the fact that it doesn’t potentially overstay its welcome since it doesn’t have the extra dungeons found in other ports, but I can’t say I’ll be replaying Final Fantasy II either.
- The Math King 9/10: One of the best early Final Fantasy games, with a fun level up system, lots of party configuration (before elder scrolls did it) and a decent plot. The music is insanely good in this remaster. This is essential.
