I'm actually not very fond of the monolouge, truth be told. Character development and backstory isn't a bad thing, but in the grand scheme of things, this adds almost zero significance to the overall plot, even in the long run. You still know very little of Alphinaud at this point, who, by contrast, IS a major player in the plot, to the point where he can be argued to be the main character after you.
