The game ramps up the difficulty (insofar as preserving every data core) around levels 10-12 (where I currently sit). Your first wave of enemies can have 100-200 hit points each and you still only have 100 memory at the beginning of the level to set up your initial defenses. However, I have yet to finish a level with less than 8 data cores and that without sparing more than a moment to set up an extra tower or two.
