6Welcome to Let’s Play Gothic - Episode 2!
Gothic is an old RPG game developed by a Piranha Bytes, which is a German company that has created games like ELEX, Risen series, and of course the first three Gothic games.
It is the time of war, and humans are losing in a fight against the orcs. In desperation to even the odds - and to come up victorious - king Rhobar II seeks to obtain a magical ore from the Valley of Mines in the island of Khorinis. A colony was formed in the valley, and the mages attempted to create a barrier to prevent the convicts from escaping. Yet… something went wrong. The barrier expanded to cover the entire valley, and the mages were trapped within as well. During this chaos, the convicts rebelled, killing the king’s men. The king had no choice; he had to negotiate. The convicts demanded supplies, and thus a new arrangement was made.
To this day, the colony is split up into three factions, each with a different structure, goal, and purpose. The Old Camp thrives on supplying ore to the king in exchange for goods from the outside world, living without seeking freedom. The New Camp, however, seeks to escape the colony by blowing up the barrier using the magical ore. The camp thrives by stealing from the other factions and by growing their own rice and schnapps. The Swamp Camp, however - or known as the Sect Camp - seeks to escape the barrier by praying and appeasing to their god in hopes that he will bring salvation. Their community thrives on selling drugs derived from the swampweed that they grow, a fairly popular commodity among the convicts.
So where does the protagonist - whom I call Man - fit in here?
Man is a convict who is thrown into the Valley of Mines. Before Man is thrown, one of the magicians gives him a letter that is to be delivered to the Fire Mages trapped in this colony. And so here we are: trapped in the colony, punched in the face as a welcome gift, and then saved by a man named Diego. How will Man survive and thrive among thieves, bandits, murderers, and the like? And will he manage to find a way out of the colony?

Making the game work on modern PC:
- Install Gothic (preferably from GOG as it, for some reason, runs without too many problems unlike Steam version).
- This link pretty much lists everything you need to download, which is described below. You can find almost everything under “Installation Guide” section.

- The GOG version already comes with the 1.08k patch. If you don’t have it installed in your game, then download and install it (scroll down to to the Steam installation guide under “Installation Info,” and you’ll see it there).
- Install Gothic1_PlayerKit-1.08k then Gothic1_PlayerKit-2.8
- Install the G1Classic-SystemPack (I have version 1.8).
- Download Artemiano’s Textures (may need Google Web Translator as it is in Russian, or you can find what looks like “Скачать” as it is the download link, usually):

Unpack and copy the VDF file into Gothic/Data folder.
- Download Fixed_Carnage_Heads_Models_DrG.VDF and also copy it into Gothic/Data folder.

-Don’t remember if I installed this (probably did, doesn’t harm to), but download Gothic 1 Classic Textures Mix 3.3.

It’s a German executable, just a heads up. You only need to install the “Menü” texture of this pack.

Run the patch. When it asks for an executable, point it to Gothic.exe that is found under Gothic/system folder.
-May be unnecessary, but for Gothic.exe, GothicStarter.exe, and the like found under the system folder, right click and go to Properties, and check “Run as Administrator.”
I also tweaked the Gothic.ini a bit to my liking. If I forget anything, I’ll update the description.
