Story: 9/10
Playdead has worked some magic in this game, especially with the story. There's never really any solid explanation as to what is going on in this game. Just a boy going through a facility, getting caught in a dark experiment, and meeting an untimely end. What really brought the enjoyment out of this game for me was the buildup. Each new area, each new puzzle, brought more and more questions than answers. New dark secrets were revealed at every corner, from people being carted away, to naked people floating on the ceiling, there was never really a point where I didn't have a question about what it all meant. The end...Well the end really brought the full tragedy into light...No pun intended. As for what REALLY happened, I feel like it's mainly up to the player to decide, which really adds a layer of depth to the game that we don't see very often anymore.
Audio: 10/10
The audio in this game is PERFECT. From hearing the rain and wind in the starting forest, to being in large rooms and hearing your footprints, to muffled noise underwater, all the way up to hearing the groans and moans of that ball of people, Inside's audio did what it was supposed to do; build atmosphere. There were times where my hairs were standing straight up, the stress was just that intense because of the sound of it all. Everything was incredibly polished and well timed out.
Graphics: 9/10
The graphics in the game are beautiful! Really no complaints here at all. They made a huge jump compared to Limbo, with this game being 3D and including colors, and they absolutely KILLED IT. The detail in the backgrounds and the way the dev's effortlessly made the world around you massive did a phenomenal job of making the player feel the reality of their character, a small boy in a secret way darker than he realizes. What impressed me even more than the graphics of this game were the animations of it all! The main character moved so fluidly at every turn. The animations for pulling switches or pushing boxes looked almost like real people doing the acts. NOT JUST THE MAIN CHARACTER. The background characters even blew me out of the water. They responded to whatever you were doing, if you moved here and background character might move over here, it really felt like you were in the world.
Controls: 8/10
All the right side of the keyboard basically. Everything was responsive and easy to learn, even if I donked it up several times.
TL;DR
Inside is a dark, atmospheric, story telling puzzle game that ABSOLUTELY needs to be experienced in order to understand what the game is actually about. The character animations and background detail really make it feel like the world is alive around you, and it's not a pretty world. With audio that creates a sense of unease and buildup accompanying the incredibly dark story, this game is one of the best I have ever played. Playdead blew it out of the water on this one. I don't know what else to say other than PLEASE try it out yourself, you'll see what I mean then.
Do I recommend this game?: YES I HAVE NEVER RECOMMENDED ANYTHING MORE.
