Yea, this first phase of this boss is probably the worst in the history of videogames. First off you have to get the right leg, plan in advance where it will land, then somehow get in front of it to hit the gems or whatever on the front of the leg. Also, apparently if you're so far away the bullets evaporate cause there were a few times where I should have destroyed a gem but didn't. The worst glitch ever happens in the next part though.
