Battles are done in a pure we go then they all go fashion. Normal attacks will involve any monsters or allies that are nearby and/or within their attack range. The order of the attacks in combat is a bit variable but Speed is the primary factor.

Dark Gates will spawn enemies over time and also release a flow of energy that will reduce resistance if you happen to be in the flow. Purifying gates will purify the flow as well, causing damage to any enemies also in the flow (or healing allies if the flow is light blue). You can direct the flow by using Change Ups or by putting a character in the flow or on a gate and facing them in a direction. You can meld flows together to form other colors and produce other elements besides the basic three.

Purifying gates is the only way to level up gear. You also get money from purifying as well a 2x bonus if you purify all gates in a battle. You can also use Purification on enemies and have a chance to make them turn to your side upon being slain. Unless you do some major sidequest, you cannot do this to bosses.
