Mega Man X, 20 years old this year, is quite simply one of the best platformers ever created. X was a bold new twist on the classic Mega Man formula. The structure remains mostly the same - fight through 8 robot bosses to reach the final boss' hideout which consists of multiple fortresses. Along the way the player gains more and more abilities from fallen bosses which serve as weaknesses for future bosses and methods of accessing previously inaccessible secrets.
The core of the game is simple, and yet Mega Man X is composed so brilliantly that it offers a degree of depth unheard of for its era. Gratifying and challenging without being frustrating, fun without being long in the tooth, and endlessly entertaining - Mega Man X was one of the Super Nintendo's defining games, and the series continues to be relevant today despite 9 years passing since the release of the last entry.
