Let's Play: Metal Slader Glory - The Game that Almost Destroyed HAL Laboratory (English Translated)
Tonight, we're going to look at an old Famicom game that no one's ever heard of because it was Japanese exclusive and even then a lot of people didn't want it. Metal Slader Glory, an anime visual novel sort of game that was the brain child of a HAL Laboratory freelancer working on a failed manga of his before the wrong middle-manager saw it and decided to not only greenlight it, but back it with 40% of the company's total capital.
The game ended up being such a financial drain on HAL Labs at the worst time that the company almost ended up folding entirely as new cartridges had to be engineered just to bring this game to market and it reviewed not well. However, thanks to Nintendo for stepping in, HAL Laboratory was rescued just in time for them to start making Kirby and eventually Smash Bros. in the next few years.
Nintendo's history would've been completely different if Metal Slader Glory hadn't been such a colossal boondoggle and terrible idea, so tonight, we're going to see what sort of game could it be that would make HAL Labs stake most of their company on its success.
