This is a game from my childhood. It is a point and click adventure game with role playing elements like skills and character stats. You can improve skills by doing certain actions associated with that skill and improve your character. Climb a tree to get better at climbing. Sneak around to get better at sneaking. Throw some rocks to get better at throwing. Cast a spell to improve your magic as well as that particular spell. This game was my first experience with that game mechanic that I later found and loved in the Elder Scrolls series. You didn't just level up and get points to distribute somewhere, you leveled up each skill by using that skill.

Some quests require a certain level of skill to complete and there are multiple ways to complete certain quests and tasks. Though it is not necessary to level things up to their max like I strived to do in this playthrough.

There are 3 main characters to choose from; Fighter, Magic User, and Thief. You can also create hybrid/mixed characters. A Fighter with Magic or a Magic user with stealth to give a couple examples.

In this playthrough we choose Thief and give them all the skills. The only character you can do that with in this game since they start out with most skills already and you get some starting points that you can attribute to adding in those missing skills or boosting existing ones.

In this game you need to eat, sleep and can make use of other items to assist in restoring your stats and allowing to progress on in the game. You can earn Gold and Silvers through combat, quests and games. Some events are time sensitive, but most of the time you can do things at your leisure and in the order to which you discover them.

Another unique aspect of the Quest for Glory series is that you can save and import your character upon completion of the game and take them with you into the following games of the series. Maintaining your skill levels and also some items.

There is an original EGA version of this game originally called Hero's Quest that was parser (typing) based. Both versions are good and offer some differences. I had the remake when I was a kid so I played that one. I later tried the EGA version and enjoyed not having the conversation options available to you. You had to figure out what to type and what to ask. As a recorded playthrough I thought that typing might be more distracting as my keyboard is a bit audible and typing around the microphone may prove challenging.

The sequels:
Quest for Glory 2: Trial by Fire (Originally called Hero's Quest 2: Trial by Fire)
Quest for Glory 3: Wages of War
Quest for Glory 4: Shadows of Darkness
Quest for Glory 5: Dragon Fire
