We head back to Guardiana only to find it in bad shape. Buildings have been destroyed and so have many of the soldiers. Fortunately, most of the citizens are intact. Gort decides to join us in our cause. After looking around and checking out Headquarters, we head into Guardiana Castle and find Kane of the Runefaust Army in the Throne Room.

(Character Notes: Gort is a tank! His defense and HP growth render him nearly impervious to enemy attacks. This aspect makes him ideal for protecting weaker units by acting as a shield. Gort can also push an offensive; he's capable of dealing heavy damage with whatever weapon he is wielding.)

He is apparently looking for some kind of Treasure. He strikes Varios with a mortal blow and leaves. The King gives us his final words and Varios' daughter Mae, decides to join our group.

(Character Notes: Mae is one of the first knights you will acquire in Shining Force. If trained properly and leveled up, she has the potential to be a beneficial addition to your team. Although her attack does not exceed some of the other fighters, Mae has an extremely high defense and HP growth. For a good portion of the game, Mae will likely have the most HP out of all your members.)
