I know I went off a bit too much about the tributum stuff, but the narrative does a poor job of a proper segue. It's very easy to miss the line about the empire's demands, it's never said HOW they demand it or how often, and the word tributum is not one to be found in most people's vernacular. You have a character like Lyse around, who is always treated like the dumb one. That she understands what is going on immediately before the casual viewer might is just odd, and I feel like there was a short scene or a few lines that were cut.
Perhaps of the elder had spoken about it during out meeting that it was due soon, and that would further give him reason to want us to get the heck out of there now.
