We've been tasked by Helena to give him the eternal rest that he deserves, to inform him of the deception and the truth; that he's dead and has been dead for quite some time. We do this not because we'll get a plot item critical to completing the game for doing so but because it's the right thing to do.
That we'll also get a plot item critical to completing the game is of course, an added bonus.
And don't worry about the pair of gauntlets hinted at in the comments. It may be a while before I get a chance in the recorded videos to go get them but I most certainly will at some point.
