Game shows are a very peculiar niche in gaming. Lots of people watch and enjoy them, making you think that there’d be almost as many people would want a version to play at home. This isn’t the case, however; rarely are they big budget releases and the only time I can remember a video game based on a game show being a top seller was for the Game.com, a system with only twenty games released for it in its lifetime. That doesn’t mean they’re bad games or that they can’t be enjoyable, just that most people would prefer to play something else.

Take Wheel of Fortune, for instance. The premise for it is very simple: guess a puzzle letter by letter, earning money as you go by spinning the wheel to determine what each letter is worth. The format has remained enjoyable enough to stand the test of time and the Game Boy version of it manages to retain what makes the show what it is. What it lacks is the fancy glitz and glamour that would have been possible to program in but would also have required a fair bit of effort on the part of the developers, something that most game show adaptations tend to lack. Having seem some of the wonderful things the Game Boy can do, I can only conclude that the blandness of the visuals and the poor music are such to save on development time and cost but that’s just a guess. Either way, the game succeeds at being a passable, if dry, representation of what you’d watch on TV.

Would I recommend this game to anyone? If you’re really, REALLY desperate to play Wheel of Fortune on your Game Boy then go for it, but otherwise there are far better and more accessible versions of the game available nowadays.

So, what’s next? I think it’s time to once more fall into another game I’ve never played before, this time one that has action as well as mystery. There’ll also be combat, something that I haven’t had to deal with very often alongside puzzles, making for a breath of fresh air in the puzzle-fest that we’ve had of late.
