Time for more jump 'n run, platformer goodness with a classic SNES game!
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island - or in our case the Game Boy Advance version, Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 - is the first game where Yoshi gets to be the main character.
After the stork carrying Baby Mario and Baby Luigi to their parents is attacked by Kamek, Baby Mario lands on the epnoymous Yoshi's Island. There, a group of helpful Yoshis find him and, being adorable, decide to reunite him with his brother. Because somehow, Baby Mario can sense where Baby Luigi is. Don't question it.
What starts of with a story book-like intro, continues to awe throughout with adorable, hand drawn graphics and a simply catchy soundtrack, both of which elevate the great level design. The gameplay is easy to learn and rewarding, thanks to the continously increasing difficulty and the tight controls. The game also introduces future Mario series staples like Bowser Jr. and Poochy the dog. Plus, you'll get to try your hand at a bunch of different mini games. And if you put enough effort into it, you'll get to unlock some Special and Extra Stages that are basically 2D Elden Ring.
If you haven't yet, definitely give Yoshi's Island a try when you get the chance!
The GBA version is a bit more widescreen friendly and uses soundeffects from later Yoshi games, so we played that one. Unfortunately, the colors of the port are a bit weird, since they were made for the non-lit GBA screens of the time. Thankfully, the Yoshi's Island (SMA 3) Colour Restoration romhack fixes that by restoring the original colors.
