I go on the quest to turn in the 12 slimes and explore the new area they open up. Turns out they were guarding the master sword! I proceed to experiment with and discover enhancements from the master sword, including: longer reach, can damage enemies that used to require fire, longer sword beam reach, swordbeam available throughout entire top life block, and it reveals sparkles on the map where interesting encounters are, such as items I've already gotten as well as one of my 3 missing heart containers!
