it's 3 squares taller, it's 3 squares longer, and it's more than 4 times faster. the redstone is a lot simpler and more compact.
the video is also in a lot higher quality with a much better framerate.
i find it hard to figure out in what way this version isn't better.

once you activate the lever it sends power through the green wool next to the underground piston, then one tick later, the piston pushes that block into the clock. with the wool block moved, it is no longer recieving power from the lever. this allows only 1 tick of the redstone power from the lever to travel into the piston tape. you can see this at 0:52
The redstone Clock at the beginning sends a 1 tick pulse every 4 ticks and requires that the wool block be extended to work, if the wool block is retracted the clock stops and must be restarted (by extending the block again).
i showed how i power all the pistons compactly with top slabs. top slabs function as a diode, meaning that redstone power can travel up, but not down, this quirk also works for blocks you do not suffocate if you are buried in, such as glowstone, and glass, but you cant place redstone on glass so the process for using glass is different.
after these tricks, it's just a matter of timing the pistons to fire at the correct time

The two sets of pistons in the center push as soon as i can make them
the two sets on the far outside try to push at the same exact time, but the redstone signal does not travel far enough to do so, so they push one full cycle later (4 ticks) causing the center pistons to push alone, then the center and the outside pistons to push together
The other 4 sets push 2 ticks later (Half of the clock's value) than the center ones
