Let's Talk About the GTX 1070's Performance!
Read entire description! (and note the title of this video... "Let's talk" implies this video will be a chat) (there's even a stuffed animal in video preview pic)
I've had the GTX 1070 Founder's Edition (straight from Nvidia) for about a week, and I've really wanted to post videos of how it performs in games, but there's been a problem with the card's consistency of performance. While it always performs "well," it does not always perform the exact same way. I try to show some of that, in this video.
The inconsistency in performance has made it difficult for me to record footage that I feel demonstrates how games "really" play. It could be considered anywhere from "lazy" to a flat out misrepresentation for me to just post the first results I can record, so I have spent more than 20 hours testing different variables to determine how the card can repeatably perform.
To put it shortly: Leaving the card "stock" can have a wide variety of results. If the ambient temperature in the room is low, the card can automatically play games very well, with no problems. But if the room is warm-hot, the card is going to need some help, namely, overclocking and turning up the fan, on the card.
But that's not the end of the experience. Depending on how hot the card gets and other factors that seem to affect the boost, even overclocking the card and turning the fan up won't provide a consistent experience.
I think part of the problem might be that Pascal cards have some tomfoolery going on that is used to conserve power. But also, there are more and more reports that the GPU boost is just finicky with these cards.
Anyway... I spend a lot of time showing a "window" of performance that can be expected when using this card. Depending on the various factors that affect the GPU boost, The Division can be expected to play anywhere from the low 50's to the mid 60's (frames per second), in 1440p, with the settings I've selected, in this video. (mainly High for all the Shadow settings and Medium for a lot of the other settings, like Depth of Field and Ambient Occlusion) I do show the settings, toward the end of the video. Also, notice that the clock speed is constantly fluctuating. With Maxwell, the clock would generally stay pretty static, during game play. I think a lot is going on that makes performance, with this card, inconsistent.
Settings shown and explained from 25:10 - 29:37. That more or less ends the performance demo. The last 10 minutes of the video have me continue to show how the game plays, while talking about my channel. There is no need to watch the last 10 minutes, if you don't want to.
Also... I talk about how I am about to start using 4-5 different testing computers, for this channel. So far I have been using 2. I also talk about how it seems that some fairly big channels are going to ALSO start doing this, even though I've been planning and setting it up for me to do it first. (I was in talks with multiple bigger YouTube channels about my test setups, and then suddenly, some very well known YouTubers started announcing they were going to be using close to the same setups that I am. I do not believe it is a coincidence.)
If the work I do is useful to you or has helped you, please consider liking the videos and telling your friends about them. This channel grows because of people like you. I appreciate all of you.
