Let's Try: Coral Island
0What if Stardew Valley had a way higher fidelity, Indonesian influences, and also a whole under-water biome to explore? That would be a good start in explaining Coral Island, but as much as you can compare them, Coral Island has its own twist on things.
Welcome to Coral Island! A small village that has seen better days, due to some oil spills off the coast. You show up sick of your former life, looking to start fresh by farming. It's not the most original origin story, but it's worked for literally every other farming/lifestyle/whatever-you-call-this-genre of game.
Your task, such that it is, is to help raise the towns rating (currently at F) and keep the village from being turned into an Oil town by Pufferfish, the games Big Corpo Antagonist. There's quests to do and farming to be done; mysteries to unlock, mines to .. well, be mined. And people to befriend and romance(?).
Overall, my initial take on the game is fairly positive! It's cute, it's fairly well-written, the island feels very much alive, and there's a selection of QoL features that help eliminate some of the tedium that is common to this genre. I don't want to spoil it all, so just watch the video and see for yourself.
I'm looking forward to coming back to the Island after a major update or two, just to see how things are progressing. I will for sure be playing this in my spare time though.
