Let's Try: MythForce
Disclosure: I got a key for this game through DareDrop.
Hey the 80's called, and they want you to become the fantasy hero you always dreamed of. In MythicForce you take on the role of one of 4 heroes with their own powers and battle through episodes of enemies in order to defeat The Bad Guys TM. You can go it alone, or join up with up to 3 other players and fight as a team.
The game is a roguelike, featuring difficulty levels, repeatable runs, and so many things to unlock and upgrade. There's a lot of customization under the hood, though I struggled to actually find where all of that customization exists. Maybe that's on me for skipping through the tutorial, but I'd argue the game has it more opaque than it needs to.
The style of the game is interesting, in that characters, enemies and interactable items are all rendered in a flat 80's cartoon style (and done well at that), but the rest of the world is more traditionally 3d and.. well game-ish. It's an interesting choice that I personally like, but could be off-putting to players. To each their own, you know?
My biggest hangups with the game are that there aren't nearly enough voice lines, the UI could use some TLC, and there isn't enough variation within the arenas.
The characters will all interact with each other between combat rounds, and within one run I was already hearing repeated lines. If this game is really trying to capture that 80s cartoon vibe: It needs a lot more quip-y one-liners for each characters.
When I mention the UI, I mean more specifically the menu system out of combat. There's no easy or obvious way to back out of a lobby, and honestly the whole game-start process is just kind of confusing. In addition to that, the upgrade area is not immediately obvious, and a lot of what makes this game neat (customization of character builds) is just kind of obfuscated. This is all very solvable, so I'm hoping they turn an eye to it soon.
The arenas issue is simply that they need more variation within their arena zones. It gets very same-y very quickly.
Overall I enjoyed the game, and I can see a lot of fun being had with a bunch of friends. As the game stands right now, I simply think it's "fine".
