Well it's the first day of classes and you show up late. As a result you're left to be taught how to tame and use the local magical animals to do your bidding. Portal Fantasy is Pokemon, but if you went to the comedic sitcom community college version. You accrue tasks from the locals to help 'em out, and are accidentally thrust into something seemingly much bigger than your paygrade.
The game works as a sort of team battler akin to pokemon and other monster battlers of it's kind. There's a slew of elemental types, moves and the like, as well as a system of ... well not... killing... your magical creatures, but uh... "converting them back to their basic magical parts" which you can then use to juice up your other magical dudes.
Overall it's a fine game, though the platforming sections leave something to be desired. The art is great (and I still think is done at least in part by the Potion Permit team), the music's lovely, and the writing is silly without being obnoxious.
I did get completely steamrolled by the first boss I ran into. I'm still not 100% sure what happened there, but that felt rough.
