You can easily defeat this clown by going into setting and exiting the game at the top of the stairs. When I reloaded back in all three cages were broken, and the enemies attacked the clown and killed it for me, and it didn't move or retaliate. It is guarding the area with the La Bleiwies wine for a sidequest, and drops a hunters amulet which increases Exp aka Ergo acquisition.
