Super Famicom era RPGs that never released in English are my thing. But now that Romancing SaGa 3 and Seiken Densetsu 3/Trials of Mana have finally released to English audiences, I have to move on to another obscure cult classic: Live a Live.

(EDIT: lol live-a-live dropped for English speaking audiences, so uhhh, below is spoilers if you haven't played the game lmao.)

I actually like Live a Live for similar reasons to Romancing SaGa 3 and SD3 -- all three games feature multiple protagonists with multiple vantage points, but they each take a bit of a different perspective on this. In Live a Live, there are 7 stories for 7 main characters, and unlike in Trials or Romancing, these seem at first to be entirely self-contained with no interaction between each other (each protagonist is from a different era, after all.) Each self-contained story has a different take on the RPG mechanics by playing into the stereotypes of its setting. It's cute, but some might find it a bit too simplistic.

...but when you've finished the 7, and you think you're done, something unexpected happens.

...see, then, the 8th story comes, which seems like a more standard medieval RPG. You're the shining hero. A traditional JRPG spikey blond hero who is the pinnacle of chivalry.

And then come the tears.

Also, they just had a 26th anniversary "surprise" livestream and they *didn't* announce a translation/localization of the game. So, yeah, let's definitely cry * a * live.

I didn't do a story with this one because quite honestly, I couldn't figure out how to tell a relevant story without spoiling the heck out of some major story details.
