Lockerbie bomber arrested in the US after 34 years
After 34 years, justice may finally be served for the victims of the Lockerbie bombing. The BBC reports that Abu Agila Mas'ud, the man charged with making the bomb used in the attack, has been arrested in the US.
On December 21, 1988, Pan-Am Flight 103 was brought down by a bomb, killing all 259 passengers and crew on board. The attack, which is the deadliest terror attack to occur on British soil, also claimed the lives of 11 people on the ground. The bomber, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, was convicted in 2001 and given a life sentence. However, he was released on compassionate grounds in 2009 after being diagnosed with cancer and died in Libya in 2012.
Two years ago, US Department of Justice (DoJ) officials formally charged Mas'ud in connection with the Lockerbie bombing, alleging that he was responsible for delivering the bomb to al-Megrahi and setting the timer on the detonator. American prosecutors have now charged Mas'ud with "destruction of an aircraft resulting in death" and "destruction of a vehicle by means of an explosive resulting in death".
The US has a particular interest in prosecuting those responsible for the bombing, as 190 of the 270 victims were American citizens. The arrest of Mas'ud brings hope to the families of the victims that they may finally see justice served for their loved ones.
