Do you truly believe in the power of prayer? How much thought and emotion do you put into your prayers each day? Is it simply a rote response or do you expect it to make a difference in your life and the world around you?

These are questions that have been asked throughout history, and they are worth considering as we enter the season of Advent. John the Baptist, who preached with images of a God who meted out vengeance and reward, anticipated a savior with an axe in hand ready to punish the unrighteous. But Jesus emphasized a different dimension of Isaiah's prophecies, focusing on the needs of the marginalized and the potential for faith to transform lives.

This idea is beautifully illustrated in the image of dewfall, which is mentioned in the second eucharistic prayer. While we often think of dew as falling from the sky, science tells us that it actually forms in the interaction between the humidity of the air or material and changing temperature. This symbolizes the difference between God acting independently from outside our realm and God calling forth the innate potential of creation, including ourselves.

As we reflect on these ideas during this Advent season, let us ask ourselves what we expect of God and how our expectations impact our prayers and actions. Let us open ourselves to the potential for our faith to awaken and flourish, just like the desert landscape bursting into bloom after a sudden rain. Let us not be scandalized by Jesus' message and methods, but be open to the God of the blooming desert who awakens the hidden seeds of our potential. May our prayers be a reflection of this faith and trust in God's power to transform our lives and the world.
