Разработка игры началась после выхода Sonic Adventure 2 под руководством дизайнера Такаси Иидзуки продюсера Юдзи Наки. В отличие от прошлых частей серии, Sonic Heroes создавалась сразу для нескольких игровых платформ с целью привлечения новых игроков. После выхода многие обозреватели в основном положительно оценили игру, хваля в первую очередь дизайн уровней и музыкальное сопровождение, но критикуя неудобную систему управления виртуальной камерой и озвучивание персонажей.
Sonic Heroes представляет собой трёхмерный платформер. В нём даётся возможность управлять командой, состоящей из трёх персонажей. Непосредственно игрок управляет одним из них, но по мере необходимости он может выбрать другого героя; контроль над двумя другими членами группы берёт на себя компьютер. В меню на выбор предоставляются следующие команды
команда Соника, состоящая из собственно ежа Соника, лисёнка Тейлза и ехидны Наклза;команда Тьмы, состоящая из ежа Шэдоу, летучей мыши Руж и робота E-123 Омеги
и команда Роуз, состоящая из ежихи Эми Роуз, крольчихи Крим с ее питомцем Чизом и кота Бига;
команда Хаотикс, состоящая из хамелеона Эспио, пчелы Чарми и крокодила Вектора.

The development of the game began after the release Sonic Adventure 2 under the guidance of a designer Takashi Iizuki produced by Yuji Naki. Unlike the previous parts of the series, Sonic Heroes was created for several gaming platforms at once in order to attract new players. After the release, many reviewers mostly positively assessed the game, praising primarily the level design and musical accompaniment, but criticizing the inconvenient virtual camera control system and character voicing.
Sonic Heroes is a three-dimensional platformer. It gives you the opportunity to manage a team consisting of three characters. The player directly controls one of them, but as necessary, he can choose another hero; the computer takes control of the other two members of the group. The following commands are available to choose from in the menu
: Sonic's team, consisting of Sonic the hedgehog, Tails the fox and Knuckles the echidna; team of Darkness, consisting of Shadow the hedgehog, the bat Rouge and the robot E-123 Omega
and Rose's team, consisting of a hedgehog Amy Rose, Krim the rabbit with her pet Cheese and Big the cat;
team Chaotix, consisting of Espio the chameleon, Charmy the bee and Vector the crocodile.
