A playthrough of Sunsoft's 1992 license-based platformer for the Nintendo Game Boy, Looney Tunes.

Looney Tunes is a classic old-school style side-scrolling hop'n'bop platformer that stars, as you might've already guessed, the Looney Tunes crew. It's got a ton of variety to it despite its short playtime, with each stage giving you control of a different American cartoon icon, including Daffy Duck, Tweety, Porky Pig, Taz, Speedy Gonzalez, Road Runner, and finally Bugs Bunny for the finale. It's also packed with cameo appearances by other characters, my favorite being Elmer Fudd as the last boss.

Looney Tunes was developed in-house by Sunsoft, and it really shows. The graphics are spot-on, and the sprites nail their TV likenesses: they're extremely well detailed and move at a surprising speed for a Game Boy platformer. The music, though not done by Naoki Kodaka, is excellent throughout, and the controls are spot on - they actually feel quite similar to the controls in the first Tiny Toon Adventures NES game. It also offers a fairly stiff challenge, though it's nowhere near as brutal as Game Boy version of Revenge of the Joker or Gremlins 2.

If you want a cutesy cartoon-based platformer for the Game Boy, I absolutely recommend it. It's an excellent game, and it still would be without the license. But, this is old-school Sunsoft, and they really turned this "kiddie" game into a top-tier effort on the Game Boy.

And apparently, many people agreed, since SunSoft saw fit to update it and release it on the Game Boy Color several years later, and wouldn't you know? Even though seven years had since passed, it was just as good as ever and rightfully praised. This GB game now stands at 25 years old, and I think it's still just as good as it ever was.

*Recorded with the DMG shader through Gambatte in Retroarch for that classic dot-matrix look!*
