Under Saruman's orders Wildmen and Uruk-hai ravaged the Westfold sparing no mar nor woman nor child, burning as they went. They had come without warning, like a swarm of great gray locusts, armed with torches and steel. The citizens of Rohan were unprepared for such a terrible surprise.

It was a tainted and horrible conflict, a massacre from beginning to end. Yet those who could fight back bravely did so, for they had naught to lose.
