StephenPlays brings you the backstory on the F-Zero video game brought to you by: Lore in a minute! F-zero is a video game developed by Nintendo for the SNES gaming console.

About F-Zero:

F-Zero takes place during the 2050's after which humanity has been in contact with alien life where billionaires and aliens create the F-Zero races which are similar to Formula One races. These races take place on a track with vehicles that hover above the track. Players can choose between four video game characters and race in various leagues.

Gameplay:

Players can choose from four unique F-zero characters, each with their own abilities. Players race each other while trying to avoid slip zones, magnets and other debris to keep players on the edge of their seat the entire race. Each player has a certain amount of energy which is determined by the number of collisions they have. When players hit another vehicle, crash into land mines or the side of the track, their energy decreases. Races in F-zero last five laps around the track and for each lap, players are rewarded with the “Super Jet”, a speed boost, as well as points.

There are two game modes in F-Zero which include:

-Grand Prix Mode - A player chooses a league and races other players in all the tracks in that league.

-Practice Mode - Where a player is able to practice seven courses from the Grand Prix Mode.

F-Zero has three leagues, Knight, Queen, and King, which include a total of fifteen tracks. The game has three difficulty levels including: beginner, standard, and expert for each league. Players can unlock master difficulty once they complete all the tracks in that league on expert class.

Characters:

In the original F-Zero game players can choose from four initial characters: Captain Falcon, Samurai Goroh, Pico and Stewart. Captain Falcon, also known as Douglas Jay Falcon, was created by Takaya Imamura and Shigeru Miyamoto. Captain Falcon’s vehicle is the Blue Falcon and he is known as a bounty hunter and a successful F-Zero pilot. Dr. Stewart who races in the Golden Fox is a Doctor who joins the races after the death of his father. Pico drives the Wild Goose and is rumored to be a contract killer with a fast ride! And last, Samurai Goroh drives the Fire Stingray and is the boss of a bunch of bandits who live in Red Canyon.

Awards & Reviews:

-F-Zero joined the Player’s Choice line after selling a million copies
-In 2003, IGN ranked F-Zero as the 91st best game ever and 97th in 2005.
-F-Zero was praised for its strong use of SNES’s proprietary Mode-7 technology which gave it a very 3D look and feel.

Good: High quality graphics at the time of launch, great soundtrack and strong gameplay

Bad: F-Zero does not have a multiplayer mode.

Transcript:

Back in the 20th century, mankind was seized by a mass hysteria -- a paralyzing fear of anything and everything alien. But it’s the 26th century now and those xenophobes are gone, replaced not by respect for all life forms, but rather, the desire to crush all other competitors through unnecessary wealth and luxury. Thus, an intergalactic trade federation was established across the planets in the universe, including worlds with totally cool names like Death Wind, Silence, and White Land.

Those with oodles and oodles of money soon grew weary of their hedonistic lifestyles; they had a need for speed the only way the wealthy could dream up. We’re talking about racetracks hundreds of feet in the air with anti-gravity guide beams, landmines, and other novel traps that could kill man and alien alike. Racers from all walks of life came to compete in this death-defying challenge, including a mysterious bounty hunter, a weird alien hitman, and a fat Japanese man. The inaugural race was brutal, leaving many maimed and scarred for life. People were outraged...and then they got used to it and demanded more blood.

So are you ready for the fastest, most punishing race in the galaxy? Grab your race car and find out whether or not you can survive this grand prix known simply as...F-Zero.
