Transcript:

In 1996, headed by Yu Suzuki, AM2 announced they were working on a Virtua Fighter RPG for the Sega Saturn. The Saturn was dead by 1998, but Suzuki’s team continued working to fulfill their promise of rocking the gaming world for the upcoming Dreamcast console. Under the alias Berkeley, the project development was estimated at a then record $70 million dollars.

When footage was released with Virtua Fighter 3tb, the term F.R.E.E., Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment, was coined, referencing the game’s non-linear storytelling and emphasis on player choices. Project Berkeley soon officially became Shenmue, an open-world game featuring ground-breaking developments only seen in movies at the time. There were unique clay models and voices for all characters, a score performed by an orchestra, and extensive use of quicktime events to create a cinematic experience for the player.

Released in 1999, the game was lauded for its high production values that were way ahead of its time, which led to...dismal sales with complaints that the game was too slow and self-indulgent. Despite poor numbers, the sequel, Shenmue II, was released for the Dreamcast and XBox in 2001. And while the entire story of the franchise has been written, the development of Shenmue III has been halted at least twice and may never be finished.
