LoZ FSA - OoB (Explanation and update)
Out of Bounds is probably the most abstruse glitch in this game. It completely depends on the surrounding and is kind of unique every single time. Or place, rather.
First, you need access to the GBA screen, and the entrance positioning of that heavily influences the successful usage already. Then you can use different C-Formations, or use obstacles to get the links stuck there while you enter the GBA screen
(For that, you most likely want to carry items, like you can see in this video. When you carry items, you can "push" and "walk" at the same time. That, and the weird formation mechanics in general....).
While you enter, the links will move a few tiles, depending on the current C-Formation, and other factors...
Generally speaking, you want to position the links somewhere useful so they can pass through a wall or get on a higher layer.
The most annyoing part is triggering the actual glitch. You want to press X on the frame you regain control after you entered the GBA screen.
This will seperate the links (as always), but this time they are actually still one the TV screen, invisible and most likely stuck somewhere.
Now, thats a "frame perfect" glitch in a game running at 60 FPS.
It does sound weird, considering that the glitch is used about five times during the run. (Well, it IS a runkiller after all.)
Emulator says that you have one frame, so yeah... I don't know.
After some/a lot of practice, I can say that it isn't that difficult.
Well, sometimes I can get it first try, or within a few tries.
Sometimes it takes me fifteen or twenty tries, and then you just lose like two minutes.
If the setup is easy, that is (the current "setups" are simply entering the GBA screen with a certain C-formation. So thats like no setup at all).
Of course, if you don't feel like doing a precise, timed input, you can always just mash and hope for the best.
If you are decent at mashing, it works quite fine actually.
So, after the links are separated, you enter the screen again with the links "out of bounds" now.
Note: It works in both ways, GBA-TV and TV-GBA
Depending on how you use it, the links will be OoB on the TV or GBA screen.
Now you want to select a link that is positioned somewhere useful and then reunite (Note that you cannot see them while they are OoB).
Whether with L/Y or a C-formation... well, it depends I guess. Like everything.....
In this video for example, it is pointless to switch to red, because he is just on tile in the wall, and will simply respawn next to it.
Well, this will be the case for most OoBs, since the game does not like it when a Link gets stuck somewhere...
For some reason I got stuck in the wall this time (reuniting with purple, L), and played around with that.
I tried it again with pots, simply because they are awesome in this game, and then I could move around to some extent.
This is a whole topic in itself. Maybe I should call it Pot OoB. Or just Item OoB, so we don't cause confusion here.....
The new thing here actually is the setup. Note how I first position purple next to the pillar, and then make blue push against purple.
I don't know why, but this is actually the reason why this setup leads to a successful OoB.
If you don't do it this way, you won't be able to reach the upper level with the switches.
It seems that the positioning of Green just before reuniting is also of prime importance...
So, to sum up, you have 1000 factors, that might change for every single OoB.
Good game, it really is.
Note to avoid confusion: The process of doing OoB is done after 0:16, I then just move the links around and reunite so I can actually step on both switches.
Also, that tunnel effect just at the end.
