This is the music I wrote for the CGI animation Luca, which was created by animation students at Arts University Bournemouth!

The music was intricately scored, as it was intended to serve as the narrative, i.e. there was no spoken dialogue and few sound effects. Most of the score is directly tied to the actions on screen; for example when the monster is spooked, the music mimics that emotion on cue.

The score went through many tiny changes due to the nature of frames/segments of the animation changing over time during its development. For me, this challenge is part of the fun of writing for animation! I starting writing the music near the start of the project, so I was lucky enough to be able to write the music alongside the animation team's progress, with constant feedback.

The film cannot be shown for now because it is being showcased at film festivals, but I'm able to share the score. I hope you enjoy listening to it and imagining what's happening on screen :-) (here's a clue: it's about a boy who befriends a monster ;) )

I was blown away by the quality of this animation - the art direction, lighting, scene direction, colours, everything! - and so I feel honoured to have been a part of this extremely talented team of animators at AUB.

Happy listening :-)
