GAMEPLAY
Risk vs. Reward - Defenders can now make aggressive or conservative tackles in the open field, with proximity cones showing the effective range of each. Aggressive tackles can lead to big plays and fumbles, but conservative tackles are more likely to bring the ball-carrier down without giving up extra yards. The choice is yours, but so are the consequences.
Redesigned Coverage Logic - Have a bigger impact in the secondary with redesigned AI, providing more intelligence to how players react to the ball carrier. Defenses are now smarter when going for a swat vs. an interception or a tackle. Man coverage has also been improved to impact how much separation receivers are able to get on cuts in their routes, resulting in improved behavior of the defender.
MODES
Run The Gauntlet - Skills Trainer has been expanded to teach not only gameplay skills, but strategy and football concepts as well. Learn how to read zone defenses, when to hot route a receiver, and more with nearly 50 new tutorials and drills. Once you've mastered the basics, enter The Gauntlet where your skills will be put to the ultimate test through intense challenges.
Connected Franchise - Interact and build your team with more control in Game Prep all-new to CFM. Want to develop your backup QB? Between matchups, spend extra time on him each week to earn training points without having to force him into the real games before he is ready. Also new in CFM is the Confidence rating system. Build your teams' confidence through performance and front office transactions. Balance keeping player's confidence up, to increase abilities and build player XP.

Make the Tackle
New this year is a cone which appears in front of defenders whenever a ballcarrier is within range of a tackle. This visual aid helps players understand when they’re in position to make a play, leading to more consistency and fewer missed tackles.
Disrupt the Line
Traditionally, a majority of Madden NFL players have preferred to play the game as either a lineman or a blitzing linebacker. The problem has always been that once you are engaged by a blocker it’s very hard to get off the block and make a play.
Jump the Snap
First is the ability to attempt to jump the snap by pressing RT/R2 at the snap of the ball. Successfully timing a jump will allow a defensive lineman or linebacker to gain the upper hand against a blocker, increasing the defender’s chance of executing a successful rush move.
Block Steering
When engaged with a linemen defenders can attempt to steer the lineman in an attempt to either clog up a running lane or shift the opponent’s weight in a specific direction. Shifting weight is beneficial as it greatly increases the chance for a defender to execute a successful power or finesse move.
Tightening the Zones
Zone coverage has been enhanced this year so players in the defensive secondary more smartly patrol their assignments and are more dangerous than ever when attacking the ball. Top defenders such as Richard Sherman and Patrick Peterson are better able to read a quarterback, and will react to the throw as soon as the QB locks his shoulders and begins his throwing motion rather than once he releases the ball.
More Pass Variety
In previous editions of Madden NFL quarterbacks would either execute perfect passes that were right on the numbers, or significantly off-target throws that landed way out of bounds.
