Mafia (2002) – Full Story Summary
Setting:
The game is set in the fictional American city of Lost Heaven during the 1930s, inspired by Chicago and New York. It follows the life of a cab driver who becomes entangled in the world of organized crime.
Plot Overview:
Prologue – 1938:
Former mobster Tommy Angelo meets Detective Norman in a diner.
Tommy offers to turn state's witness against the Salieri crime family in exchange for protection for himself and his family.
As part of the deal, Tommy recounts his entire story.
Tommy’s Story – 1930 to 1938:
Joining the Mafia:
Tommy works as a taxi driver.
One night, he’s forced to help two Salieri gangsters, Paulie and Sam, escape from a hit squad sent by their rivals, the Morello family.
Later, Morello’s thugs attack Tommy in retaliation. Salieri's men save him and offer him a job.
Driven by anger and the allure of money and respect, Tommy joins Salieri’s organization.
Life of Crime:
Tommy becomes a trusted soldier.
He performs a range of criminal activities: extortion, assassinations, smuggling, and bank robberies.
Tommy develops a friendship with Paulie and Sam.
He also grows closer to Sarah, the daughter of Salieri’s bartender, and later marries her.
Cracks Appear:
Over time, Tommy grows disillusioned with the mob life.
He realizes that Salieri, who once claimed to have a code of honor, is just as ruthless as his rivals.
He sees innocent people getting hurt, and becomes increasingly troubled.
Betrayals and Tragedy:
Tommy and Paulie plan a bank heist on their own, keeping it secret from Salieri.
After the robbery, Tommy finds Paulie dead in his apartment — betrayed.
Sam then betrays Tommy, revealing that Salieri ordered his death for acting independently.
Tommy manages to kill Sam during a shootout at a hotel.
Breaking Away:
Realizing the Mafia will never let him live in peace, Tommy approaches Detective Norman to inform on the Salieri family.
His testimony leads to the collapse of Salieri’s empire — many gangsters are imprisoned or executed.
Salieri himself is sentenced to life in prison.
Epilogue – 1951:
Years later, an older Tommy lives a quiet life with his wife Sarah and their daughter.
In the final scene, while tending his garden, two men approach Tommy.
They are hitmen sent by the surviving members of the Mafia.
They kill Tommy, saying:
"Mr. Salieri sends his regards."
Tommy dies, reflecting in his final moments that although he lived a rough life, he was proud that he tried to protect his family and that everything eventually catches up with you.
