Make a Good Level Contest 3 - Hill Top Harbor - 19th Place
I decided to upload videos of old contests I made levels for. This was made for the Make a Good Level Contest 3, hosted on raocow's talkhaus in 2016 in partnership with my good friend Tyty, who has been my co-commentator for my VLDC9 and VLDC11 LPs.
I remember there being a minor controversy over our level's placement, because 3 of the 4 judges scored it really highly, while one judge scored it as below average. It led to some debate over aesthetics versus raw level design, open, "rompy" level design versus tight, deliberate design, and more. I hold no hard feelings over it any longer, and understand where they were coming from with their harsh criticism.
While I'm still extremely proud of this level and how we accomplished our goal of making a level with a multi-tiered layout, I do have one regret. The final room is one big downwards climb that will safely take you to the end if you just slide down the first hill and keep holding down. But instead of letting players figure that out, I opted to include a flashing d-pad down sign to explicitly tell players that. At the time I thought it was a nice touch, but almost as soon as the contest submission period had ended and judges began their work, I came to regret putting it there. I should've let the player discover the slide for themselves.
