"In this video, we explore the findings of a research study on the impact of panic symptoms on the quality of life and disability in patients with bronchial asthma. The study highlights how anxiety and panic disorders are common comorbidities in asthma patients and significantly affect their health, quality of life, and disability levels. We discuss the prevalence and severity of panic disorder (PD) among asthma patients, and how panic symptoms exacerbate asthma symptoms, leading to worsened outcomes.
Key findings include:
60% of asthma patients report panic symptoms, with 46.7% diagnosed with panic attacks.
A significant impact on quality of life, particularly in the physical and environmental domains.
A high disability score for patients with more severe panic disorder and asthma.
This research emphasizes the need for further exploration of the biological and cognitive mechanisms linking panic disorder and asthma.

Impact of Panic Symptoms on Quality of Life and Disability in Patients with Bronchial Asthma
Asthma is a common breathing problem that is becoming more widespread, affecting people all over the world. Along with asthma, many people also experience anxiety and panic, which can make asthma worse and affect how they manage their condition. These psychological issues can lead to faster breathing (hyperventilation), overuse of asthma medications, more frequent hospital visits, longer stays in the hospital, and increased use of steroids. This study aimed to explore the relationship between panic symptoms and asthma, focusing on how common panic disorder is in people with asthma, how it affects their quality of life, and how much disability it causes. The study found that 60% of asthma patients had panic symptoms, with nearly half of them meeting the criteria for panic attacks. About one-third of the patients had a diagnosable panic disorder, with many of them reporting symptoms like shortness of breath, choking, or a fear of dying. Patients with panic disorder experienced a lower quality of life, particularly in areas like physical health and the environment. In addition, patients with both asthma and panic disorder experienced higher levels of disability. The study suggests that panic and anxiety are common among asthma patients and can have a significant impact on their overall well-being, highlighting the need for more research into how these two conditions are connected.
