Make Your Own DIY Color Changing Slime | UniLab | UniLand Kids STEAM
Welcome to the UniLab, UniLand’s very own science show, that explores the wonders of the Universe. Move over Bill Nye the Science Guy, there are new scientists in town! We’ll be breaking down some complicated STEM/STEAM lessons by doing our own DIY experiments and explorations, perfect for you to do at home or show off at your school science fairs! So grab those safety goggles and have an adult nearby so we can visit the UniLab.

🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴THERMOCHROMISM LESSON 🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴
✍🏼OBJECTIVES📝
Students will be able to do the following:
• Define thermochromism ✅
• Understand how thermochromic pigment works. ✅
• Recreate thermochromic reactions. ✅
😳WHAT IS THERMOCHROMISM?😱
Do mood rings really reveal our inner thoughts and feelings 😮 or are they just a clever chemical reaction? 🤔
The color of anything you see is due to the visible light that is reflected by the object entering your eyes. For example, this 🍎apple is red because red visible light is reflected from the emoji to your eyes 👀. The spectrum of colors in visible light are also called the rainbow colors. Using the first letter of the colors as they appear in the rainbow spells out: ROY G. BIV (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet). 🌈
What does all this have to do with thermochromism? Well, first we have to break down 💔 the word: thermochromism. Thermochromism is a big word that can be split into two smaller words: thermo meaning temperature 🌡️ and chromism meaning color 🎨. Thermochromism, then, has to do with the way colors react to temperature.
Leuco dyes or color-changing pigment 🖌️have a lot to do with thermochromism. These pigments contain a molecular structure ⚛️that changes at a specific temperature🌡️, which alters the wavelengths of light it reflects. For the black ⚫ changing to pink 🌷 pigment, the pigment will absorb all light wavelengths until it reaches 88°F (31°C). At the higher temperature, the molecular structure shifts and absorbs all wavelengths but red/pink, which is the shortest wavelength on the visible color spectrum. The reflected red/pink color is what our eyes 👀observe when this shift happens. A pigment that shifts from blue 🔵to colorless goes from reflecting only the blue wavelength to reflecting all of the wavelengths.
The capabilities of thermochromic pigments are used for simple thermometers. Another application of thermochromic pigments is in heat-sensitive paper 📜, which allows receipts to be printed without the use of ink.
💪So let’s try to recreate this process with color changing slime! 💪

INGREDIENTS:
• ¼ cup school glue
• 1 tablespoon water
• 3 teaspoons thermochromic pigment 🖌
• ¼ cupe liquid starch
• Food Coloring (to your liking)
• Mixing Bowl
RECIPE:
• Pour ¼ cup of glue into a large bowl.
• Add 1 tablespoon water.
• Stir until combined.
• Once it’s all well combined, add 3 teaspoons of the thermochromic pigment.
• Mix well until there are no more clumps in your base.
• Start with combining ⅛ cup of liquid starch and mix.
• Slowly add the remaining ⅛ cup of liquid starch up until your slime is thick and not sticky.
• Don’t forget to knead with your hands and make sure everything is well combined.
Your slime will last up to 2 weeks if stored in a sealed container.
👩🏼🏫LESSON REVIEW 😜
• What happened to your slime when you placed it on something hot? What happened when you placed it on something really cold? Describe the changes that your slime went through.
• How do the changes to your slime relate to thermochromism?
• Where else have you seen thermochromism occur in real life?
