Science communicator Huw James shows us how easy it is to make a lava lamp from household objects in 5 minutes.

IMPORTANT: You will need one sober adult with a sense of scientific wonder...

RECIPE
To carry out this experiment you will need: An empty plastic bottle, water, vegetable oil, food colouring, a torch with a large headlamp, a funnel and an alka seltzer.
1. Set down some old newspaper on your work top just in case you have any spillages.
2. Get yourself an empty plastic bottle (it can be any size but we recommend a 2 litre bottle)
3. Place the funnel in your bottle
4. Now slowly fill your bottle up ?'s of the way with vegetable oil.
5. Fill up the remaining ? of the bottle with water until it reaches the narrow neck of your bottle.
6. Remove your funnel
7. Let the water settle at the bottom
8. Now pour in 10 drops of food colouring. You're free to choose your own colouring. I wouldn't advise white or yellow though (it won't look as good as red, blue, green etc).
9. Give the bottle a shake to  stir the contents
10. Dim the lights in the room
11. Now break up your alka seltzer and drop it into your lava lamp
12. Put on the bottle lid
13. Your lava lamp will now start to 'bubble'
14. Shine your torch onto your lava lamp to witness the magic unfold
15. Now sit back and enjoy your homemade lava lamp.

Live Experiments: Our resident science demo thrill-seekers will give the YouTube audience their big science treat each week with an experiment where you can find out how to make food dance, power a light bulb with household objects and create mega smoke rings!
