starting ship building, I am going to try and have the whole ship, inside and out as 36 sections, that each are no greater than 256 polygons each... (medium LOD level) 128 at far distance and 512 at close distance

since the larger sections are about 25 units, and the draw distance is 30 units, no more than 6*256 polygons should be in view at once inside the ship or outside it.
