Making Sombron Brush His Teeth-Fire Emblem Engage: Reincarnation Run-FINAL
It's been forever, but the reincarnation run is finally over! Thankfully.....
Despite my nonstop complaining, Fire Emblem Engage is just OK at best. For me, the one main thing i can say about it is that it's a big missed oppurtunity.
-The story is generic and unmemorable with characters that are just also forgetable or just downright obnoxious.
-They also did the Emblem Rings dirty... you know.... the legacy warriors that WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BE CELEBRATING!
They're just husks with no character and you only get one map and low effort 3 sentence conversations that add next to nothing about them.
-The art design is ok. It's not as bad as people are making it out to be and i think it's better than some early fire emblem games but more importantly, the Shadow Dragon remake. Ugh... those designs were so bad for that ds game.... If they brought Mina Pikazo or whatever her name is back, the best thing i could say is to keep the artstyle, but design them like ACTUAL fantasy characters that could come from that time like the past games. Some like Timmera and Hortensia look downright stupid and out of place.
-Music is pretty alright even though there are only like 5 tracks that stand out to me.
Faraway Holy Land and Bright Sandstorm are some of my favorites while most tracks are just there. There's only a few that i didn't care for like Lumera's map theme and Defect.
I know.... bold statement, but i have a lot of those.
-Graphics are pretty good this time around! Definitely a huge step up from Three Houses as that game aged right when it came out. There's a few performance issues like lag, but i don't think it's a deal breaker like Scarlet and Violet.
But despite everything i've complained about, the gameplay is probably the best thing that Engage will give you!
It's honestly given the best gameplay and mechanics the series has had in a long time.... Well... mostly....
Don't get me wrong, Three Houses had a great concept with allowing you to build your class the way you want to, but the Emblem Rings give off so much depth and stragety you can have with a map to approach it your own way.
You can also inheirit skills from the base that i never bother going to and further build your characters.
Just.... it takes forever to build SP so expect yourself to go back there a lot after dealing with obnoxious skirmish maps where they pull the Awakening treatment of "Let's send every unit at you even though you're trying to grind and know you can't take more than 3 hits!" I feel Three Houses and Fates did this so much better and i don't know why the series keeps flipping between this.
They introduced the Smash and Break mechanic, two mechanics that I forgot about because they kinda fall off.
The smash mechanic is used so few times and there's barely any moment in that game where i need to move a unit off a space.
And the big elephant in the room next to the other elephants in the room....
The Break mechanic.....
I'm very mixed on this.... on one hand, it makes you think about who to send up and take out, while on the other hand it's too punishing.
I also feel they executed this in a not so great way.
In the beginning, it's right in your face, but as you play it more.... it doesn't even become a threat. Maybe on harder difficulties, but i don't care enough about this game to try maddening.
I wish they would space out units more with weapon types to actually reward you with this mechanic.
There's so many maps in the game where they just have both a sword and lance unit right near you to the point that you get broken anyway!
It's annoying! Not to top it all off with my last point....
The RNG-
I swear this series is all over the place with its RNG. Now i know that all of us have different experiences with this so this obviously doesn't apply to everyone, but for me....
I hate this game's RNG. It's like a tolerable Thracia 776 but only because i can hit my higher percentages.
There's so many instances where you get hit by 15s-30s for no reason!
Of course, not everything is in your control in these games and there are moments where you'll get unlucky, but they should make this happen less often man....
I don't care if it's fair or not, but i feel that you should be rewarded for having a good hit rate and punished for having a bad one and the series can't seem to make up its mind about this.
In the end, I feel that Engage has put a dent in the reputation of this beautiful series, and my hope for Intelligent Systems after this is to mainly give us a better story and world, even if it's simple, and MAKE IT MEMORABLE!
Expand the gameplay or use what you have to create something new.
I know they can do it but.... they just... don't sometimes.
I don't know what the next Fire Emblem game would be for the channel but i'm leaning toward New Mystery Of The Emblem and Three Houses.
