This is a video of a simulation of death and immigration using a population of m&m’s.

The complete description of this activity occurs at the SIMIODE website simiode.org as Modeling Scenario 1-1-S-MandMDeathAndImmigration at https://www.simiode.org/resources/132.

This scenario is one of the most popular ones offered in SIMIODE and has proven to be a very successful first day activity in differential equations courses.

Basically, one sets an initial population and a constant level of immigration for each generation of the m&m population.

At each generation or iteration one tosses the m&m’s from a container onto a plate and for each m&m if the m on the m&m is facing up that m&m dies and is removed from the population. One then immigrates the constant number of m&m’s by adding this number of m&m’s to the surviving population to form the next generation. Then the toss, death, immigration, and record cycle begins again. This continues for at least 12 generations.

The data is plotted and a conjectured model is fitted to the data with parameter estimation.

NB: There is one place where the narrator says “six” but means “nine.” Can you find it?
