Tripwire Interactive created and released Maneater, an action role-playing game. The player takes control of a female bull shark who must evolve and survive in an open world in order to exact revenge on a fisherman who disfigured her as a pup and killed her mother in the game. The game is narrated by Chris Parnell, who voices the host of an in-game reality TV show called Maneaters vs. Sharkhunters and guides the player through the game.

The game is an action role-playing game in which the player takes on the role of a third-person character. The player takes control of a baby bull shark who must avenge its mother, who was killed and disfigured by a shark hunter called Scaly Pete. The shark's basic attacks include crashing into opponents, siloing out of the water, and stun whipping enemies with its tail. It can also take advantage of its surroundings in battle, such as using a swordfish as a spear. To acquire nutrients, such as proteins, fats, minerals, and rare mutagenics, the shark must hunt and eat other marine animals such as fish and turtles. Humans can be attacked by wreaking havoc along the coast, damaging yachts and cars, and throwing people off jet skis. The shark must reach underwater grottos while the player absorbs enough nutrients to unlock new abilities and grow in size, allowing the shark to take on larger and deadlier creatures. Players can obtain advanced enhancements and customization options such as external bone plates, shadow armour, and electromagnetic spikes to further improve the shark's fighting abilities as it evolves into an adult megalodon.

Players can freely explore the open world of Port Clovis, which is divided into seven regions, while playing as the shark. Hidden landmarks can be found, and side goals can be completed. Other predators, such as muskellunge, barracuda, alligators, sperm whales, orcas, and even other sharks, will attack and kill the shark in each area. They'll have their own apex predator as well, which would consume the shark. A great barracuda, a shortfin mako, an American alligator, a great hammerhead shark, a great white shark, an orca, and an albino sperm whale are apex predators that are larger and have a different appearance than their usual species. By defeating these predators, the player can gain special abilities. The universe reacts to your actions. Human bounty hunters will be sent to track down the shark as it causes further damage. Additional rewards will be given to the shark if it kills the ten lead hunters, who are called characters.
