Marble Madness II (Arcade Prototype) Playthrough
331 years after it was originally due to release, Marble Madness II is now finally available for everyone to play.
(Originally had a link to the ROM here but then I realized that it probably wasn't a good idea. Just search for it on archive.org, rename the .zip file to "marblmd2.zip" and use MAME 0.245 or newer to play it.)
Overall, I don't think this game is as good as the first, so it's not too hard for me to see why Atari Games chose not to release it (also because fighting games like Street Fighter II were just WAY more popular in arcades at the time). The game puts an annoying amount of enemies in your path and I dislike the joystick controls as they are nowhere near as precise as the first game's trackball controls (though an earlier build of the game did use trackballs). Still fun though, don't get me wrong. I like the powerups, the bonus stages, the turbo mechanic and of course the fact that the game has more levels than the first. I think if this game had been reworked and ported directly to home consoles and computers of the time instead of being outright canceled, it could've been successful.
All in all, I'm glad I finally got the chance to play this. I found out about this game for the first time through a YouTube video back in 2007 (15 YEARS AGO) and I definitely didn't think it'd take THIS long for it to be released, but here we are. We can thank prototype hoarders for that.
I died quite a bit in this and had to continue twice, so don't expect expert gameplay or anything. (I really, really dislike the joystick controls.)
