Well after some downtime I was wondering what to do next, then I saw this sign waiting for a bus by this nearby store called PNP Games. "Mario Kart 64 Tournament Nov 22, free entry with donation to WPG Harvest"

I'm like "Awesome!". I tell my friend about it, we manage to get something to donate and went there yesterday. At first, we only expected like 8 people, then soon after people started arriving quickly and rose to about 40 people.

On 2 Televisions, 4 players at a time would race in certain cups. Rules went like this:

Each player is guaranteed 4 rounds, but you can only ever use a character once the entire tournament. So pick Mario and you cannot use him again for example. To avoid severe cheapness and ridiculous short-cutting, the following tracks were selected:

Round 1: Moo Moo Farm - 50cc
Round 2: Mario Raceway - 100cc
Round 3: Toad's Turnpike - 150cc
Round 4: Bowser's Castle - 150cc

If 3 or more people tie after 4 rounds, a battle in the Block Fort is be used to determine 2 players for the Final 4

Final Round: Rainbow Road - Extra

Unfortunately I sucked it up big time for the first two rounds (3rd then 4th), but manage to save myself in the last two rounds for an okay standing (1st and 1st) = 12th overall. My friend however maintained a very solid ranking placing 2nd only in round 2, but first in the other 3.

This video shows the last two matches: Final Four Qualifier and Last round. In the Qualifier, which has been cut-up due to length restrictions, Wario (buddy) pulls out a come-from-behind win, even after being shot into lava!

For the Finals, Rainbow Road Extra, the whole round is shown. You might think people are crazy not to go for the big shortcut, but think of how often you can miss, and in a tourney? (You gotta be kidding me if lightning hits you in mid air....) Not too many wow moments, but if I could have my own matches recorded then it would have been a slice up of all the big things. Especially since I got Item-owned through both of them (Mario Kart Wii -style)

Great fun here. The prizes weren't too extravagant but like $50 Store credit, $25 Credit etc. (Pretty much 1-4 games/accesories). At then end, they said they might be doing one for Super Smash Bros 64 in January. Now THAT would rock.

Note: I was the only one who recorded some footage and it was always between people so excuse the slightly moving picture at times. I couldn't get my own matches recorded and a majority of them were skipped (plus I could only get 15 minutes of video on my digital camera).

Also: Original music added into the Final Round. matches with 3+ players disables music.
