This is the Battle Mode in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and this is very different to the base game. In the base game for the Wii U, Battle Mode took place on racecourses, and Balloon Battle was the only mode you could play, the courses that appeared in Battle Mode for Mario Kart 8 were Wii Moo Moo Meadows, GCN Dry Dry Desert, SNES Donut Plains 3, N64 Toad's Turnpike, Mario Circuit, Toad Harbour, GCN Sherbet Land, and N64 Yoshi Valley.
In this game, this mode is like the Battle Mode in previous Mario Kart games where you have courses based on arenas, the courses are Battle Stadium, Sweet Sweet Kingdom, Dragon Palace, Lunar Colony, 3DS Wuhu Town, GCN Luigi's Mansion, SNES Battle Course 1, and Urchin Underpass.
There are five different modes, first is Balloon Battle, which has been in many Mario Kart games, a new mode called Renegade Roundup, where one side has Piranha Plants and have to catch the other team, and the ones caught are place in cells, and other players on the same side can free them from the cells. Bob-omb Blast is a mode that originated from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! where you only use Bob-ombs to blow up other players and score points, Coin Runners is from Mario Kart Wii, and it did also appear in Mario Kart 7, it is where you have to collect the most coins, and you can hold more than 10 coins unlike in Mario Kart 7. Shief Thief is a mode from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! where you must hold onto a Shine Sprite for 20 seconds, or 30 seconds in team play.
I play as King Boo in this video, as he is another character that was added in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and was not in the base game, and there is an item exclusive to Battle Mode, it is the Feather, which is an item that was never seen in the Mario Kart series since Super Mario Kart, you can steal a balloon, 3 coins, or a Shine Sprite from other players with that.
Battle Stadium is a new course which is kind of like Mario Kart Stadium, but as a Battle Course, and it is shaped like an "8", as a reference to the title of this game. Sweet Sweet Kingdom is based on Sweet Sweet Canyon, and it uses a remixed version of the exact song, Dragon Palace is a Chinese themed course that uses a remixed version of the music for Dragon Driftway, and it is my favourite Battle Course. Lunar Colony is a course that is entirely anti-gravity, and it is divided in two parts, the moon and the colony, and I like the music for that course.
Then for the classic courses, first is 3DS Wuhu Town, this was in Mario Kart 7 and it takes place in the daytime, as the course in Mario Kart 7 took place at night. This courses uses a remix of the main theme from Wii Sports Resort, which was used in the tracks Wuhu Loop and Maka Wuhu, which were respectively called Wuhu Island Loop and Wuhu Mountain Loop in Europe.
Then GCN Luigi's Mansion, which plays a remix of the Luigi's Mansion track from Mario Kart DS, because in the original game, Luigi's Mansion played the song for Bowser's Castle in Double Dash!!, it is a three floor maze-like area, so this can be a tricky course. Then there is SNES Battle Course 1 from Super Mario Kart, now modified to include ramps and other things, and it does use the Battle Course theme from Super Mario Kart.
Then Urchin Underpass, which is one of the Turf War stage from Splatoon, and there are two different songs, the initial theme is "Splattack", and the song when there is 1 minute left is "Now and Never", and the item roulette uses the ability slot roulette sound effect from Splatoon, and Splatoon's currency is used in place of coins for this course.
