since the Android port doesn't support wifi multiplayers yet, I tried running linux ubuntu 20.04 on my phone and melonds and it worked really fine.

the gameplay sucks because I had to use a virtual gamepad app for the keyboard, note that connecting an actual keyboard can work as well if you have one.

whats required:
-termux(avoid the Google play version as it s outdated)
-andronix or any other way to install linux on your phone
-a vnc app(vnc viewer or bvnc free like I used)
