Mario Kart XXL (GBA) tech demo, 2004 - lost prototype found! 3D racer with dual playfields!
The dedicated team at Forest of Illusion released a long lost and forgotten tech demo called Mario Kart XXL for GBA (Gameboy Advance). Created and pitched to Nintendo by the team that made the Turrican series in 2004, this prototype is very impressive as there are two stacked playfields in this top-down racer. It provides a really cool 3D effect and the Mario racer is also 3D as the camera can pan and zoom. Unfortunately, it didn't go anyway. But can you imagine F-Zero or even a Kirby's Air Ride in this style?
Just wanted to quickly and casually demonstrate some of the gameplay in this now freely available GBA rom.
