Mario finds himself in Pokemon Stadium and finds Doctor Mario. Mario asks what he's doing there and was given a Pikachu from him. Mario says he's used to fighting other people physically in Smash battles and saving Peach from Bowser. Even though Mario isn't used to battling using Pokemon, he learns from the basics of Pokemon battles while battling his brother Luigi.
