Love it or hate it, let's Marmite cake it! Mrs Barry is the biggest fan of Marmite, so I thought I'd treat her today to something a bit different. I tried out two absolutely bizarre Marmite Cake recipes, one sweet one from a recipe suggested on Discord and one savoury. Now I'm no Marmite connoisseur, so it's over to Mrs B for this taste test!

If you're brave enough to try the Marmite cakes, the recipes are below:

Savoury Marmite Cake Recipe

250g plain flour
1 tbsp baking powder
200g mature cheddar cheese, grated
4 free-range eggs
125ml olive oil
100ml milk
1 tablespoon plain yoghurt
1 (large) tsp Marmite
Large pinch of salt
Freshly ground black pepper

For the topping:
20g butter, melted
2 tsp Marmite

The first step is to grease the tin, you’ll want a 20cm round cake tin for this recipe. Now put your plain flour and baking powder into a big old bowl, then add 150g of the grated cheese in and reserve the rest.

In a jug, mix together olive oil, milk and yoghurt - this will look a bit weird, but trust the process, folks! Whisk up your eggs in a big bowl, then add in the black pepper, salt and Marmite. Now slowly add in batches of your milky, oily mixture, whisking as you go.

Add in the cheesy, floury combo and whisk until it looks a bit like a coffee cake mixture. Then finally sprinkle the remaining cheese on.

Bake in the preheated oven (180C/350F) for about 30 minutes while you make the topping.

The topping is pretty simple, melt together the melted butter and Marmite. Poke holes in the top of your cake using a skewer then slather on the topping. Serve and…enjoy?!

Sweet Marmite Cake Recipe

Ingredients
100g sugar
140g self-raising flour
10ml baking powder
2ml salt
125ml milk
30ml butter or margarine
2 extra-large eggs

Topping
60g butter or margarine
45ml Marmite
25g finely grated cheddar cheese

This cake uses something called “cake flour” in the recipe, which when I’ve looked it up seems to be self-raising flour, so that’s what we’re going with!

This one starts a bit differently, we start with sugar and “very large” eggs - it truly is a real cake recipe, folks! Beat these together.

For this step, the recipe suggested doing it in a pan on the hob but I used the microwave on little blasts. Heat up your milk and butter until just under boiling point.

While that heats up, fold the flour, baking powder and a shimmy of salt through the egg mixture. Finally fold in the heated up but not boiled milk and butter.

Spoon into your greased tin then bake in a 180C (350F) oven for about 40 minutes.

The topping again here is very simple, melt together the butter and Marmite (here’s where the Marmite finally comes in!), prick the cake gently with a fork, then pour over. Sprinkle the shards of cheese over the top and serve warm!
